Vernacular has always been unconscious of the other modes of thinking and working-world views. Despite the richness of geometry and the diverse and alien form language that the vernacular offers, it operates in an isolated mode that is based on implicit craft knowledge: the master is observed and the craft knowledge is absorbed by the apprentice.
Mis-readings is interested in revisiting this mode of architectural thought. Setting the vernacular [architecture] as its point of departure, it will try to rethink its fundamental assumptions and define new and alternative paths for the future. Here we looks at the possible futures cone and the rules of Jim Dator and creates scenarios for fictional futures; futures that might seem preposterous in the beginning but are contemplations as to what the reality-architecture/future might be. We gather moments/ideas from vernacular [architecture]. From these references, several ideas will be appropriated and synthesized into a new spatial organization. Different organizational strategies that discussed. With one strategy of choice it creates a proposal: a proposal that has its point of departure in the vernacular but at the same time offers a degree of de-familiarity.
The clash between two metropolitan cities of India - Kolkata and Mumbai has always been iconic. Both cities fight for superiority over the other unaware of the fact that they are two sides of the same coin. Kolkata and Mumbai has unique characteristics. Both has their individual style and sense of existence. Merging these two cities together made me realise the unique vernacular they bring to the table when acting as one. So different yet so similar in many ways. Telling us stories about there growth, prosperity, social influences and cultural activities.
